Students enrolled in the undergraduate module How Built Technologies and Materials Made Architecture? (LAR247 – Premodern Architectural History and Theory), taught by Professor Ana Vaz Milheiro at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), Macau, were challenged to research the historical context, construction materials and systems, as well as the workers and skills involved in buildings in Macau. Students from the class Teoria e História da Arquitetura III (Integrated Master’s Degree in Architecture), taught by Professor Inês Lima Rodrigues at the University Institute of Lisbon (Iscte), developed a critical analysis of European architecture and its colonial manifestations between 1750 and the end of the 19th century, including in Macau. The exhibition’s thematic and chronological structure is based on the historiographical narrative proposed by Barry Bergdoll in European Architecture 1750–1890. According to this approach, the period is not viewed as a linear succession of styles, but rather as a political, cultural and technical transformation of architecture. Read more here.
